Ballet Palm Beach is thrilled that for the first time ever their annual performance of The Nutcracker will move to the grand 2,195- seat Dreyfoos Hall at Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, December 1, 2 and 3, 2017. With its superior acoustics and magnificent aesthetics, this new venue ensures an unforgettable experience for every guest.

Colleen Smith, Artistic Director at Ballet Palm Beach will debut a new interpretation of this timeless story with new choreography, plot, characters, sets, and costumes. “I am excited to recreate our Nutcracker matching the incredible talent of our dancers to our magnificent new venue and creating a memorable new holiday tradition for our community,”

This completely re-imagined Nutcracker is a Christmas fantasy based more closely on E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story. Hoffman is known for writing fairy tales that teeter on the borderline between reality and fantasy. Marie falls in love with the Nutcracker because she can sense his noble spirit. He becomes her prince and together, in Act 2, they return to his Enchanted Kingdom to rule. There is an overarching message of holding onto childlike innocence and wonder, yet Marie is a young adult finding her first love.

In addition to featuring 60 local Ballet Palm Beach Academy student dancers and 20 local professional dancers, Ballet Palm Beach is thrilled to have the local talents of Will Linn, Elisa Saether, Paige Sleva and Karen Roraff creating costumes and Sean McClelland designing the set. The costumers transport the audience to Colonial India in Act 2 with rich and colorful costumes made of fabric imported from India. The set, much larger than would be possible at the previous venue for this production, is designed to bring the audience right into the Christmas Eve party in the Edwardian parlor of the Stalbaum home, through the Christmas Woods, and finally into the Prince’s Enchanted Kingdom!

“After dancing in this production on many smaller stages for more than 20 years, I am excited beyond belief to be creating Marie at a venue as grand and elegant as The Kravis Center for Performing Arts,” said Lily Ojea Loveland, Principal Dancer. “It’s a dream come true.” This production is underwritten in part by Lighthouse Partners.
